Our Start

Built in the 1960s, the plywood mill experienced a significant amount of success over the years until 2009, when it was idled. In 2014, New Wood Resources purchased the rights from the city of Louisville, MS in Winston County to refurbish and restart the mill. Barely a month following this transition — on April 28, 2014 — an F4 tornado struck Louisville. In the aftermath, 10 people tragically lost their lives in the storm. Another 80 were injured and countless families were affected as a result. The plywood mill was completely destroyed, along with a number of other buildings and homes throughout the community. We are forever grateful those who were working on site that day to restore the mill were not injured when the tornado hit.

Immediately following the disaster, New Wood Resources associates were on the ground in Louisville assisting in community-wide relief efforts. In addition to supporting the work to clear debris, we organized a fund-raising campaign through Atlas Holdings’ Atlas Foundation seeking contributions from the 12,000+ employees at Atlas companies worldwide. Not long after, we presented the mayor of Louisville a $72,000 check for Winston Strong — the Winston County Relief Fund.

Breaking New Ground

On January 30, 2015, the City of Louisville — in cooperation with the State of Mississippi, Winston Plywood & Veneer, New Wood Resources and Atlas Holdings LLC — broke ground on a new, state of the art plywood mill.

Today, the mill is the newest, most technologically-advanced plywood mill in North America, featuring state-of-the art-machine control centers, and integrated computer controls throughout the facility, as well as integrated log processing, peeling and drying operations.

In Winston County alone, it is anticipated that Winston Plywood & Veneer will create more than 600 jobs (including jobs that support the facility), $28 million in annual wages, and nearly $9 million annually in other local purchases. Across the broader 33-county region, the mill will generate a projected $66 million in annual wages, more than $105 million annually in other local purchases, and over 1,400 total jobs.
